ChemD x Chem 1 sits between Chem D and Chem 91: the workhorse of the Chem family and the cut breeders reach for most on one side, the SKVA cut, the original Chemdog '91 and the clone the whole Chem family is named after on the other. CSI breed off held clones rather than off seed stock, which is why the parents named on the pack are the actual plants and not their descendants.

1 identifies the ChemD x Chem used here. Numbered cuts come out of a population that was grown and sorted, and the number rides with the plant that was kept. Two crosses that both say ChemD x Chem are only the same cross if the number matches too.

Order matters in a cross name. In ChemD x Chem 1 the Chem D side supplied the seed and Chem 91 the pollen, and the reciprocal - the same two plants the other way round - is a separate breeding decision with its own results.

Genetic Lineage

• Mother: Chem D. The most-used of the 1991 Chem phenotypes, and the one sitting behind Giesel. It traces back to another phenotype from the same 1991 seed lot. It is the Chem half of Giesel, and one of the most widely used Chem cuts in American breeding.
• Father: Chem 91. The plant the Chem name was built on, known equally as Chem 91 and the SKVA cut. Parentage: one of thirteen seeds from a bag bought at a Grateful Dead show in 1991. Skunk VA was given a cut in 1995 and has held it since, which is why the line survives.

Flavor and Aroma Profile

• The Aroma. Chemical fuel over dark turned earth from the Chem D side, against heavy diesel and soil with a thin pine and citrus line at the back from the Chem 91 side.
• The Taste. Fuel and earth, greasy and coating, finishing sour up front, turning to fuel first, earth and pine behind it, sour to close, and it coats the mouth through the exhale.

• Timing. Chem 91 runs sixty-three to seventy days, and that is the half of this cross you can actually plan around.

• Structure varies hard here. Open and loose rather than compact, wants support once the colas load from one parent; loose and open rather than compact, moderate to heavy stretch, branches that soften under weight late from the other. Plan the canopy for the taller outcome.

Cultivation and Growth Traits

• Plant Structure. The two parents disagree here, so plan for range. Chem D is a sprawler that needs propping once weight goes on the branches. Chem 91 is open and loose rather than tight, stretching moderately to heavily, with branches that soften under weight late in flower.
• Training. Worth the effort early - it is the difference between an even canopy and three colas and a lot of leaf.
• Flowering Time. Chem 91 runs sixty-three to seventy days. Start checking trichomes a week before you expect to be ready.
