The first is the Californian plant most of the modern West Coast catalogue descends from, and whose own parentage was never settled; the second, the tropical Panamanian sativa that made its name in the late sixties. Two lines that were never going to produce a quiet plant. That uniformity is the selling point. A hunt across thousands of plants is what buys it.

Genetic Lineage

• First parent: MOUNTAINTOP MINT 1. In-house stock with no listing of its own.
• Second parent: OG Kush. The Californian plant most of the modern West Coast catalogue descends from, and whose own parentage was never settled. Parentage: disputed; most accounts give Chemdog crossed to a Hindu Kush, with Lemon Thai and a Pakistani Kush also cited. The cuts that made it famous were passed as clones and never released as seed, so there is no seed record to check the pedigree against. • Third parent: Panama Red. The tropical Panamanian sativa that made its name in the late sixties. Given as a Panamanian landrace. For a stretch of the late sixties and seventies it was simply what the best weed meant, and that reputation is the only reason it survived to be preserved at all. It is worth being honest about what growing it involves: this is an equatorial plant that has never been bred for a tent. It wants the long finish, it stretches, and it will not behave like a modern hybrid. What it gives back is an effect the modern catalogue does not really make any more.
• Why it is worth a pack rather than a look. The two sides are far enough apart that seedlings genuinely differ. That range is the product.

Flavor and Aroma Profile

Neither parent is subtle, and the cross has nowhere quiet to go.

• The Aroma. Fuel and pine with a sharp lemon note over damp earth from the OG Kush side, against earth and citrus, with alpha-humulene and limonene leading from the Panama Red side.
• The Taste. Pine and diesel with a citrus edge up front, turning to citrus over an earthy base through the exhale.

What each side brings

• Two different harvest dates. Nine to ten weeks for OG Kush, long, as equatorial sativas are - eleven weeks at the very least, and ten to sixteen is the usual range given for Panama Red. Judge each plant on trichomes rather than pulling the room together.
• The smell is a negotiation. Fuel and pine with a sharp lemon note over damp earth on one side against earth and citrus, with alpha-humulene and limonene leading on the other. Neither wins outright in every seedling.
• Build. On the OG Kush side: medium-height plants with dense, knuckly flower and heavy resin. On the Panama Red side: a pure or near-pure landrace sativa off the Pearl Islands and the Darien Gap, carrying the reddish colouring it is named for over vivid green flower. Select early rather than trying to train your way out of it.
• Opposite ends. OG Kush is reported as strong, heavy behind the eyes, physical as it settles; Panama Red as cerebral, euphoric and energising, quick enough to border on psychedelic. A daytime plant. The cross sits somewhere between and moves plant to plant.
