Jilly's Twisted Sister (Cali-o x Space Queen) crosses California Orange to Space Queen, the AE77 cut of a California heirloom that has been inbred since the early eighties against a BC cross of Romulan to Cinderella 99, and one of the classic balanced hybrids. Neither is a filler parent, which is why this pairing is worth a pack rather than a look. That continuity is the point. These are not newly assembled lines - they are twenty years of the same held stock, crossed forward.
Order matters in a cross name. In Jilly's Twisted Sister (Cali-o x Space Queen) the California Orange side supplied the seed and Space Queen the pollen, and the reciprocal - the same two plants the other way round - is a separate breeding decision with its own results.
Genetic Lineage
- Mother: California Orange. A 1980s heirloom off 1970s California stock, inbred ever since, and CSI run the AE77 cut of it. Its own cross is a 50/50 hybrid crossed in the 1980s.
- Father: Space Queen. A BC cross of Romulan to Cinderella 99, and one of the classic balanced hybrids. It traces back to given as Romulan x Cinderella 99. Cinderella 99 brings the tropical terpinolene lift and the fast finish; Romulan brings the resin, the heavier calyx and the body weight. Bred by Vic High of the BC Growers Association and later popularised by Subcool.
- The point of the pairing. Neither parent needed rescuing. Putting them together is about what sits between them, not about fixing either one.
Flavor and Aroma Profile
Neither parent is subtle, and the cross has nowhere quiet to go.
- The Aroma. Actual orange peel rather than candied citrus, sitting on damp earth from the California Orange side, against tropical fruit off the Cinderella 99 side from the Space Queen side.
- The Taste. Bright citrus zest with a sweet-earth finish up front, turning to sweet and fruit-forward through the exhale.
The two halves, side by side
- Two different harvest dates. Around nine weeks for California Orange, fifty to sixty days - call it seven to nine weeks for Space Queen. Judge each plant on trichomes rather than pulling the room together.
- The smell is a negotiation. Ripe orange and mandarin over an earthy base - sweet, penetrating citrus on one side against tropical fruit off the Cinderella 99 side on the other. Neither wins outright in every seedling.
- Two frames in one pack. California Orange is compact and very resinous with a good flower-to-leaf ratio; resilient to common pests and disease; easy to grow and among the easiest plants there is to clone. Space Queen is grows well in or out, with modest to above-average yields. Decide which suits your room before you flip, because you get both.
- Opposite ends. California Orange is reported as bright and even rather than heavy; Space Queen as balanced between head and body, which is the point of the pairing. The cross sits somewhere between and moves plant to plant.
Cultivation and Growth Traits
- Plant Structure. The two parents disagree here, so plan for range. California Orange is compact and very resinous with a good flower-to-leaf ratio; resilient to common pests and disease; easy to grow and among the easiest plants there is to clone. Space Queen is grows well in or out, with modest to above-average yields.
- Training. Worth the effort early - it is the difference between an even canopy and three colas and a lot of leaf.
- Flowering Time. The parents are not on the same clock. California Orange runs around nine weeks, Space Queen fifty to sixty days - call it seven to nine weeks. Judge each plant on trichomes rather than pulling the room together.
Effects and Experience
- The Mind. Growers describe California Orange as bright and even rather than heavy.
- The Body. Space Queen is reported as balanced between head and body, which is the point of the pairing, and that is the side supplying the weight here.
