Mendo Purps x GrandDaddy Purple puts Mendo Purps over Granddaddy Purple. One is the Mendocino purple that the whole Northern California purple catalogue leans on; the other is the other California purple benchmark. Two very different plants, and the point of the cross is what sits between them. These are held cuts, not recreations. CSI's entire catalogue works that way, and it is the reason their crosses are worth chasing.

Written this way, Mendo Purps is the mother and Granddaddy Purple the pollen donor. Reversing a cross is not a formality; which plant carries the seed shapes what comes out of the pack.

Genetic Lineage

• Mother: Mendo Purps. Mendo Purps - the source stock Purple Urkle was selected out of. The purple lines people can name mostly run back through it. Its own origin is a story rather than a pedigree - the usual account has it grown from the bagseed of a purple Afghani kept since 1977 and not planted until 1998, and no source gives a clean lineage for it. It circulated clone-only at first; BC Bud Depot later stabilised seed of it, and it took High Times Strain of the Year in 2007. It is not a heavy yielder and was never grown for that.
• Father: Granddaddy Purple. The other California purple benchmark. Given as contested - its breeder gives Mendo Purps, Skunk and Afghan, while many sources give Purple Urkle x Big Bud. The lineage argument is the interesting part: the breeder's own account gives Mendo Purps, Skunk and Afghan, while most third-party listings give Purple Urkle crossed to Big Bud. Those are different plants and no source reconciles them.
• The point of the pairing. Neither parent needed rescuing. Putting them together is about what sits between them, not about fixing either one.

Flavor and Aroma Profile

Two distinct smells, and a pack will give you both plus everything between.

• The Aroma. Grape and fruit, and it looks the part from the Mendo Purps side, against sweet, fruity and floral over an earthy base from the Granddaddy Purple side.
• The Taste. Grape with dark berry under it up front, turning to berry sweetness over earth through the exhale.

How the two sides differ

• Timing splits the pack. One parent wants eight to nine weeks, with outdoor crops coming down in the middle of October, the other around eight weeks. Expect the fast plants down well before the slow ones are ready.
• Two noses, one pack. Mendo Purps contributes fruity and grape-like with deep colouration. Granddaddy Purple contributes sweet, fruity and floral over an earthy base. Which dominates is the main thing that varies.
• Structure varies hard here. Slightly indica-dominant and not a big plant - three to four feet indoors, six to eight outdoors. it is not a beginner's plant: it wants training and trimming to yield properly from one parent; indica-built, heavy colour from the other. Plan the canopy for the taller outcome.
• They pull differently. Growers put Mendo Purps at settled rather than racy and Granddaddy Purple at settled and heavy. Which end a plant lands on is the main variable.

Cultivation and Growth Traits

• Plant Structure. The two parents disagree here, so plan for range. Mendo Purps is small by modern standards and slightly indica-leaning; it needs stress training and a trim to give a worthwhile yield, which is why it is not recommended to first-time growers. Granddaddy Purple is dense and heavily coloured, indica in build.
• Vegetative Phase and Training. Open the middle out early. Light reaching the lower sites is worth more than any late correction.
• Flowering Time. The parents are not on the same clock. Mendo Purps runs eight to nine weeks, with outdoor crops coming down in the middle of October, Granddaddy Purple around eight weeks. Judge each plant on trichomes rather than pulling the room together.

• The Mind. Growers describe Mendo Purps as settled rather than racy.
• The Body. Granddaddy Purple is reported as settled and heavy, and that is the side supplying the weight here.
