Mendo Purple x Apple Fritter sits between Mendo Purps and Apple Fritter: the Mendocino purple that the whole Northern California purple catalogue leans on on one side, Sour Apple crossed to Animal Cookies, and one of the few dessert names that smells like the thing it is named after on the other. CSI breed off held clones rather than off seed stock, which is why the parents named on the pack are the actual plants and not their descendants.
Written this way, Mendo Purps is the mother and Apple Fritter the pollen donor. Reversing a cross is not a formality; which plant carries the seed shapes what comes out of the pack.
Genetic Lineage
- Mother: Mendo Purps. The Mendocino purple that the whole Northern California purple catalogue leans on. The purple lines people can name mostly run back through it. Its own origin is a story rather than a pedigree - the usual account has it grown from the bagseed of a purple Afghani kept since 1977 and not planted until 1998, and no source gives a clean lineage for it. It circulated clone-only at first; BC Bud Depot later stabilised seed of it, and it took High Times Strain of the Year in 2007. It is not a heavy yielder and was never grown for that.
- Father: Apple Fritter. A Sour Apple and Animal Cookies cross that earns the pastry comparison instead of just borrowing it. Its own cross is Sour Apple x Animal Cookies.
- Why it is worth a pack rather than a look. The two sides are far enough apart that seedlings genuinely differ. That range is the product.
Flavor and Aroma Profile
The two halves stack rather than blend, which is the whole reason to run it.
- The Aroma. Grape and fruit, and it looks the part from the Mendo Purps side, against sweet apple pastry over a fuel edge from the Apple Fritter side.
- The Taste. Grape and dark berry up front, turning to tart apple and pastry, finishing sweeter than it starts through the exhale.
The two halves, side by side
- Two different harvest dates. Eight to nine weeks, with outdoor crops coming down in the middle of october for Mendo Purps, eight to ten weeks for Apple Fritter. Judge each plant on trichomes rather than pulling the room together.
- Two noses, one pack. Mendo Purps contributes fruity and grape-like with deep colouration. Apple Fritter contributes baked apple and sweet dough with a faint gassy edge underneath. Which dominates is the main thing that varies.
- Structure varies hard here. Slightly indica-dominant and not a big plant - three to four feet indoors, six to eight outdoors. it is not a beginner's plant: it wants training and trimming to yield properly from one parent; dense flower from the Cookies side; suits indoor or outdoor from the other. Plan the canopy for the taller outcome.
- They pull differently. Growers put Mendo Purps at settled rather than racy and Apple Fritter at even rather than racy; settling. Which end a plant lands on is the main variable.
Cultivation and Growth Traits
- Plant Structure. The two parents disagree here, so plan for range. Mendo Purps is small by modern standards and slightly indica-leaning; it needs stress training and a trim to give a worthwhile yield, which is why it is not recommended to first-time growers. Apple Fritter is dense flower from the Cookies side; suits indoor or outdoor.
- Before the flip. Decide the shape now. These lines do not tidy themselves up once they are running.
- Flowering Time. The parents are not on the same clock. Mendo Purps runs eight to nine weeks, with outdoor crops coming down in the middle of October, Apple Fritter eight to ten weeks. Judge each plant on trichomes rather than pulling the room together.
Effects and Experience
- The Mind. Growers describe Mendo Purps as settled rather than racy.
- The Body. Apple Fritter is reported as even rather than racy; settling, and that is the side supplying the weight here.
In the pack
Feminized seeds from Humboldt CSI. What they sell is preservation work: old clones reversed into seed so the line survives past whoever is currently keeping it alive. Original Humboldt CSI stock.
