Take HP13, Hash Plant 13, an heirloom clone passed by hand for decades, and put it over Panama Red, the tropical Panamanian sativa that made its name in the late sixties. That is P-Red Hashplant HP13 x Panama Red. Humboldt CSI work almost entirely from clones they hold themselves, so both sides of this are the real thing rather than a seed-line approximation of it.

Order matters in a cross name. In P-Red Hashplant HP13 x Panama Red the HP13 side supplied the seed and Panama Red the pollen, and the reciprocal - the same two plants the other way round - is a separate breeding decision with its own results.

• Father: Panama Red. The tropical Panamanian sativa that made its name in the late sixties. Built from a Panamanian landrace. For a stretch of the late sixties and seventies it was simply what the best weed meant, and that reputation is the only reason it survived to be preserved at all. It is worth being honest about what growing it involves: this is an equatorial plant that has never been bred for a tent. It wants the long finish, it stretches, and it will not behave like a modern hybrid. What it gives back is an effect the modern catalogue does not really make any more.
• What to expect across a pack. Two distinct parents means real variation in frame, finish and nose. Select early and take cuttings off anything you would want again.

Flavor and Aroma Profile

Two distinct smells, and a pack will give you both plus everything between.

• The Aroma. Sharp pine and deep spice with a herbal finish from the HP13 side, against earth and citrus, with alpha-humulene and limonene leading from the Panama Red side.
• The Taste. Earthy and hash-like with pine and spice stacked through it up front, turning to citrus over an earthy base through the exhale.

How the two sides differ

• They are not on the same clock. HP13 runs fifty-six to seventy days; Panama Red runs long, as equatorial sativas are - eleven weeks at the very least, and ten to sixteen is the usual range given. Across a pack that gap shows up as plants finishing days or weeks apart.
