Order matters in a cross name. In Purple Gihad the G13 side supplied the seed and Purple Hindu Kush the pollen, and the reciprocal - the same two plants the other way round - is a separate breeding decision with its own results.

• Mother: G13. A legendary Afghani indica whose origin story is better known than its pedigree. Built from broad-leaf Afghani; the botanical evidence points to an Afghani landrace and no cross is documented. The famous story - that it was taken from a US government research programme at the University of Mississippi in the 1970s, one of a batch labelled G1 to G23 - is not supported by any documentation. The federal programme itself was real; a cultivar named G13 inside it has never been evidenced, and most accounts of cannabis history now treat that part as folklore. • The Aroma. Earthy and sweet with a musky Afghani depth from the G13 side, against sweet earth and grape with a hash note under it from the Purple Hindu Kush side.
• The Taste. Earthy hash with a sweet finish up front, turning to earthy grape closing hashy through the exhale.

How the two sides differ

• They are not on the same clock. G13 runs eight to nine weeks; Purple Hindu Kush runs seven to eight weeks. Across a pack that gap shows up as plants finishing days or weeks apart.
• Where the nose comes from. One side gives earthy and sweet with a musky Afghani depth; the other gives earthy, piney and spicy with strong grape and berry over a pungent base. Plants landing in the middle are the keepers.
• Structure varies hard here. Classic broad-leaf indica structure, short and wide, with very heavy resin production and strong hybrid vigour from one parent; dense resinous buds in deep purple with bright orange pistils under a thick trichome coat; colour develops as temperatures drop in flower from the other. • Plant Structure. The two parents disagree here, so plan for range. G13 is classic broad-leaf indica structure, short and wide, with very heavy resin production and strong hybrid vigour. Purple Hindu Kush is short and broad, a mountain-indica shape that colours hard.
• Vegetative Phase and Stretch. Shape the plant before the flip. Correcting a frame in week six is harder work than setting it in week two.
• Flowering Time. The parents are not on the same clock. G13 runs eight to nine weeks, Purple Hindu Kush seven to eight weeks. Judge each plant on trichomes rather than pulling the room together.
